The weather is finally warm, flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping! We are welcoming the season with a BIG Spring Craft Day for adults & kids on Saturday May 31 from 10AM - 1 PM at the Elizabethtown Social Center. The Center will also be open for community rec fun like pool, foosball & gaga ball.  (Look for more of these community-wide events at the Center throughout the year!)

We have three events we are planning for you: Book Sculpture Workshop with paper artist Sue Anne Walton. Our very own Director of the Elizabethtown Social Center will lead a Kid’s Cooking Class where kids cook and a (mostly) healthy lunch.  and Kid’s Crafts with our new Arts & Outreach Coordinator Emily! Community Recreation will also be available during this time to come enjoy the pool table, foosball and outdoor courts!

A little about each event of the day:

Book Sculpture Workshop with Sue Anne

Book sculpture is not just about turning books into art—it’s about reimagining something familiar and giving it a new life. Old, worn-out books or hymnals are transformed into intricate, layered pieces of art that can be both delicate and bold.

A decommissioned church in Ausable Forks donated their old hymnals to Sue Anne to give them a new life. You could choose your favorite hymn to recreate into a decoration that is beautiful and unique and has a special meaning to you.

"The meticulous cutting, layering, and manipulation of paper become a meditative act of transformation. I connect deeply with the material, imbuing it with my vision and transforming it into a tangible expression of my inner world. I invite viewers to embark on their own journey of discovery as they engage with these pieces, experiencing the interplay of form, texture, and concept." - Sue Anne

Sue Anne’s expertise and passion for book art will inspire you, and you’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind piece of art to showcase in your home or gift to someone special. Plus, you’ll walk away with the skills to continue creating on your own!

Kid’s Cooking Class: Prep & Eat Lunch

Kids unleash their inner chef!

In this fun-filled class, kids will prepare and eat a delicious and healthy lunch.  They will learn essential cooking skills, from chopping and stirring to measuring and mixing, all while making delicious dishes they can be proud of. Laurie will guide them step-by-step as they learn essential cooking skills, from safely chopping and stirring to measuring and mixing, and the joy of cooking from scratch.

Whether your little one is a kitchen newbie or already has a few dishes under their belt, this class will provide them with valuable skills and loads of fun!

Why You Should Sign Up:

  • It’s Fun: Kids get to learn by doing! Cooking is an enjoyable and practical way to help children develop fine motor skills, patience, and an appreciation for food.

  • It’s Educational: The class not only teaches cooking but also fosters life skills like teamwork, following directions, and cleaning up after yourself.

  • They’ll Make Something Tasty: What’s better than a meal you helped prepare yourself? Your child will love taking home their culinary creation to share with family and friends.

  • Builds Confidence: Cooking teaches children to try new things, make decisions, and feel accomplished—all while having fun!

Kid’s Crafts

Let your creativity BLOOM with a morning full of spring crafts!

Making fun and colorful creations, from vibrant flowers to cool spring animals. You’ll get to use your imagination, try out new techniques, and take home your very own masterpiece!

Emily will guide kids through crafting beautiful, nature-inspired projects. Your little ones will love making art from colorful paper, paint, and other fun materials that capture the spirit of spring!

Why You Should Bring Your Little Crafter:

  • Fun & Engaging: Spring Craft Day is a hands-on, creative adventure that encourages kids to think outside the box and explore their artistic talents.

  • Great for All Ages: Whether your child is just starting to learn how to use scissors or already enjoys making art at home, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

  • A Perfect Way to Celebrate Spring: What better way to mark the arrival of spring than with a day full of creativity and crafting? Plus, your child will have fun creating keepsakes they can cherish for years to come!

  • It’s Free: We want every child to have the chance to be part of this fun event, so it’s absolutely free to attend! We believe creativity is for everyone.

This event is a great way to meet new friends, try something new, and, most importantly, have fun with your family.
